I HAVE A DIALYZER WHICH WAS USED AT A 600 DIALYSATE FLOW RATE, YET YOU ONLY LIST THIS DIALYZER AT A 500 RATE.  SHOULDN'T I GET MORE CLEARANCE AT THE 600 RATE?

While you would think increasing the dialysate rate (QD) would increase the clearance, this is not always true. Every dialyzer has a rate of removal curve and when you reach the top of this curve, increasing the QD will NOT increase the clearance. So, we ONLY list the clearances based upon published QD information.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN THE COMPUTER SAYS I "SUGGESTS I USE 2 POOL UREA KINETICS?"

The computer does 12 QA checks before any data is saved. One of them is for 2 pool urea kinetics. If you are not familiar with 2 Pool, read our 2 Pool article.
Before you worry about 2 Pool, you should make sure your computer is set up to do ALL the other QA. If you have our Dlx Summary feature, the computer will automatically compare the surface area urea volume to the Urea Volume just computed. If the surface area has not been loaded in, the computer may give you the above message. The computer has detected that there is a problem with the data, and since the surface area in not available for comparison, the only other possibility is needing 2 Pool.

HOW DO I USE 2 POOL UREA KINETICS IF I HAVE IT INSTALLED ON MY COMPUTER?

You have 2 methods for doing 2 Pool, since what normally happens is you do not know that you need 2 Pool until you see the 2 Pool QA check suggesting you use it. The most accurate method is using a 70 minute BUN, but if you have just discovered that you need 2 Pool, you don't have a 70 minute BUN! So to run an estimated 2 Pool, Check the Blank which says 2 Pool, and press F-2 to Calculate.
You will now have an estimated 2 Pool calculation. If there is a significant difference between the single and 2 Pool Urea Volumes, then this patient needs 2 Pool. Next time you runs this patient, draw a 70 minute BUN. Putting the 70 minute BUN on the screen will cause the computer to automatically do 2 Pool kinetics when you press the F-2 button.
