All Kinetic Modeling programs are NOT created equal!!!
Just because a company has a nice web site, have a Windows Program, and claim they use Dr. Gotch's equations does not mean that their calculations are correct.! This is a problem the Dialysis Industry has had for years. The Industry has NO control over calculations performed for dialysis adequacy, and it puts the buyer in a difficult position. The buyer is not an expert in Kinetics, so what are they to do?
First don't accept the claims of the company. We published an article on this subject several years ago, which provides "test drive" calculations done with Dr. Gotch's equations. Contact us ( Mistebar@Juno.com) with your name and address. We will send you a copy of the article and then you can determine if the program you are looking at does compute accurate values.
Second, find out about the company and their knowledge in Urea Kinetics. How long have they been in the Kinetics business, have they published any articles, how many programs have they sold, etc. Saying you have worked with dialysis units and staff is meaningless since very few "line workers" understand Urea Kinetics.
Third, do they provide support for your staff on understanding the Urea Kinetic calculations done in units? This is an important part of service. You can have the best program in the world but if you don't know what the numbers mean, or are drawing the BUNS incorrectly, it won't do you any good!
